Retrieval of Tropical Cirrus Cloud Properties from Ground- Based Lidar and Millimeter-Wave Radar Sensing at the Maritime Continent Thunderstorm Experiment

چکیده
The Maritime Continent Thunderstorm Experiment (MCTEX) was conducted in November and December 1995 on Melville and Bathurst Islands, north of Darwin off the northern coast of Australia. Scientists from CSIRO and the University of Massachusetts (UMass) made simultaneous, collocated measurements of lidar backscatter and radar reflectivity of synoptic cirrus and cirrus outflows from island thunderstorms using instruments based at Pularumpi (Garden Point), Melville Island (11° 24N S, 130° 25N E—see Figure 1). This abstract presents comparisons of cloud structure as detected by the two instruments, showing their relative abilities to measure high, thin cirrus layers and strongly attenuating anvil clouds. We also describe current progress in the retrieval of cirrus particle size parameters through the combination of lidar and radar backscatter data.

The Optical Properties of Tropical Cirrus Clouds in the Maritime Continent Thunderstorm Experiment from Lidar and Infrared Radiometer Retrievals
The Maritime Continent Thunderstorm Experiment (MCTEX) provided another opportunity to study tropical cirrus and anvil clouds. The component of the experiment that included the lidar and radars was supported by the ARM Program. The experiment has provided a further set of data to categorize tropical cirrus in terms of their cloud-radiation interactions, a central theme of the ARM Program. The d...
متن کاملRetrieval of Cirrus Microphysical Properties with a Suite of Algorithms for Airborne and Spaceborne Lidar, Radar, and Radiometer Data
Algorithms are developed to convert data streams from multiple airborne and spaceborne remote sensors into layer-averaged cirrus bulk microphysical properties. Radiometers such as the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observe narrowband spectral radiances, and active remote sensors such as the lidar on the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CA...

[1] We developed an efficient thermal infrared radiative transfer model on the basis of the delta-four-stream approximation to facilitate high-spectral-resolution remote sensing applications under cirrus cloudy conditions in the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) data. Numerical experiments demonstrated that sensitivity in the 800-1130 cm 1 thermal infrared window spectral region is sufficient...

[1] This paper describes an algorithm for inferring cirrus cloud top and cloud base effective particle sizes and cloud optical thickness from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 0.645, 1.64 and 2.13, and 3.75 mm band reflectances/ radiances. This approach uses a successive minimization method based on a look-up library of precomputed reflectances/radiances from an adding-d...
متن کاملCloud Type and Macrophysical Property Retrieval Using Multiple Remote Sensors
A cloud detection algorithm based on ground-based remote sensors has been developed that can differentiate among various atmospheric targets such as ice and water clouds, virga, precipitation, and aerosol layers. Standard cloud type and macrophysical properties are identified by combining polarization lidar, millimeter-wave radar, infrared radiometer, and dual-channel microwave radiometer measu...
